Chesterfield is a pleasant market town south of Sheffield, bordering the Peak District National Park. Acute services are based at the Royal Hospital, Chesterfield in Calow, there is an integrated child health policy between hospital and community services. Acute and community services merged in April 2001.
There are 2,000 deliveries a year in the consultant unit and 4,300 in the district. There are 16 Special Care Baby Unit cots, 3 of which are designated for intensive care. The two children's wards contain 20 medical and 20 surgical beds used flexibly. There are excellent facilities for families. Medical bed occupancy is around 50% and the average length of stay 3 days. Around 560 new and 3,500 old outpatients attend per annum and clinics are held in Whitworth Hospital, Matlock. The Paediatric Assessment centre in the town centre has a nursery and a full range of therapists, around 50 assessments are done a year. Joint clinics are held for cystic fibrosis and paediatric surgery and urology.
There are good facilities including a library at the Postgraduate Education Centre. There are weekly tutorials (Wednesday lunchtime) on a mixture of paediatric topics. Attendance at the monthly training days is fully supported.
Attendance at the weekly medical and hospital meetings is encouraged.
