Derby Children's Hospital

In September 1996 The Derbyshire Children’s Hospital relocated to a new purpose built hospital on the Derby City General Hospital Campus. It is part of the Derby Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust.

The hospital provides 71 inpatient and day case beds for medical paediatrics and surgery, including general, ENT, orthopaedics and ophthalmology. Included is a 4 bedded HDU/level 2 ITU and the Child Development Centre. Each year there are around 3,000 inpatients and 8,500 outpatients in the medical specialities alone and 12,000 patients through the Children’s (non-trauma) Emergency Department. In 2009 the Derby Royal Infirmary will relocate to the City campus, bringing all the paediatric trauma and emergency surgical cases with it – currently there is a small paediatric surgical ward for this purpose on the DRI site.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is one of three Level 3 units in the Trent Neonatal Network. It has recently been totally redesigned and is very spacious and inviting. There are 24 cots, of which 6 are designated for intensive care.  The Obstetric Unit deals with over 5,000 deliveries a year and covers a population with over 6,000 deliveries a year.  The Baby Unit has full facilities for neonatal intensive care and up to six babies can be ventilated at one time.  Babies are only transferred for cardiac surgery (Leicester) or neonatal surgery (Nottingham).

On site is the Academic Division of Child Health under Professor Choonara. This is part of the School of Graduate Entry Medicine and Health located on site and part of Nottingham University.
