Lincoln is a pleasant Cathedral City (population about 77,000) which is within reach of such centres as Nottingham, Sheffield, and Leicester as well as the Lincoln coastal resorts. This town offers a wide range of social and cultural facilities with excellent sports centres, theatres and cinemas. There are primary and secondary schools including private schools within easy reach of the County Hospital.
Situated near the centre of the City, the County Hospital is the principal general hospital of the District. It caters for most of the major specialities and has 254 general acute beds. There is a modern purpose-built maternity unit, 15 special care infant cots. Facilities are available for intensive care for two babies. At the present time paediatric out-patient clinics are held at the Lincoln County Hospital and a children's day case service is currently available. This hospital also houses the major A&E department of the district.
The Paediatric department provided inpatient and outpatient services for general paediatrics in the Lincoln area. A neonatal service is provided for local babies including intensive care of those of 28 weeks gestation and above. Specialist clinics are detailed below. Neonatal and complex paediatric surgery is transferred to tertiary centres.
There is an active postgraduate Medical Education Centre situated at County Hospital, Lincoln. There is also an excellent medical library which serves all medical personnel in Lincolnshire.
There is an active teaching programme for all junior medical doctors which is intended as preparation for the MRCP Part I or DCH examinations (lectures). The paediatric department holds weekly clinical meetings and tutorials. There are monthly perinatal and monthly audit meetings. Each junior staff member is responsible for one audit project in each 6 month period. There is a monthly Mid Trent Specialist Registrar training day.
