Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest in the UK with an annual budget of more than £500 million. It was formed on 1 April 2006, with the merger of Queen's Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital Trusts. From June 2008 Children's Services merged onto a single site at the Queen's Medical Centre campus as part of the development of the Nottingham Children's Hospital Project. There are some residual services based at the City Hospital campus including a neonatal intensive care unit and the Children's Development Centre.
Queen's Medical Centre has one of the busiest emergency departments in the UK and has a total of 2,200 hospital beds across both campuses, of which over 100 are within the Paediatric Department. The department is situated primarily within the East Block, although the Paediatric Emergency Department is in the Central Unit.
