Introduction Entry CriteriaPossession of MRCP or equivalent plus two years basic paediatric training, of which 6 months should be in neonatal medicine, are essential. A person specification listing essential and desirable characteristics of candidates, accompanies the job descriptions. Contracted Hours and Salary ScaleHours of work vary between Trusts. All components satisfy the requirements of "The New Deal". Details of contracted hours, on-call commitments and duties are in the accompanying hospital specific job descriptions. The Specialist Registrar salary begins at £24,070 rising to a maximum of £35,080. Training CommitteesTrent Education Committee - chaired by Dr Chris Nelson (Derby) meets every 6 months. Attended by Regional Advisors, Programme Directors, Trainee Representatives and representatives of Post-graduate Deaneries. Trent has 3 regions within it North (Sheffield), Mid (Nottingham) and South (Leicester). Outline of TrainingThe training period is 5 years. Each post attracts a National Training Number and provides training towards a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training. Posts are approved by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Postgraduate Dean. Our 5 year training programme is well balanced and flexible. Most trainees want some core training with some exposure to sub-specialities which helps in making decisions about which area to take a particular interest. Training DaysEvery month all the specialist registrars in the scheme gather for a programme of sessions organised by a team of specialist registrar with the Programme Director. The format varies but often includes case presentation and discussion, clinical demonstrations, scenario based teaching and occasionally more formal lectures. The emphasis is on self-directed learning. As well as the usual clinically based issues, the important areas of critical appraisal, statistical methods, writing and reading skills, communication skills, audit, teaching methods, ethical issues, legal aspects of practice are taught. These days are compulsory and shall occur without any clinical commitment for the day. Annual LeaveSpecialist Registrars are entitled to 5 weeks annual leave in the first 3 years of training and 6 weeks in years 4 and 5. Trainees must comply with local procedures and practices. Teaching OpportunitiesYou will be expected to teach both undergraduate and postgraduate doctors and nurses. We will encourage you to develop your own methods within good practice taught locally. There are excellent regional library facilities, computer packages and audio-visual departments to help you. |
